Amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, an incident involving a flydubai flight has raised serious questions on international aviation security. Hamam Al Hamami, a 29-year-old Omani co-pilot on a flight from the UAE to Israel, is accused of attacking his co-pilot and trying to crash the plane, according to reports. It is reported that during the incident, the plane descended rapidly, but Captain Smit Machar with the help of the passengers overpowered the accused and landed the plane safely in Saudi Arabia. Amidst investigation and security concerns regarding the case, news of alleged praise of the accused has come to light in an Al Qaeda-linked publication.
Al Qaeda’s publication praises the accused
According to the report, this incident has been given a place in ‘Nawa-e-Ghazwa-e-Hind’, a publication associated with AQIS, the Indian subcontinent branch of Al Qaeda. The cover of the publication shows a plane falling in the direction of Tel Aviv. Along with this, a statement related to former Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was also published. The article praised the Omani co-pilot as a warrior fighting in the name of religious struggle. Such language is being seen as glorifying violent action and promoting the ideology of targeting the aviation sector.
Attempt to link to old attacks
The publication attempts to link the alleged plane incident with several previous terrorist attacks. The report mentions incidents such as the attack on America’s USS Cole, the September 11, 2001 attacks, the July 7 bombings in London and the Boston Marathon bombings. An attempt has been made to justify the attacks on aviation by presenting these incidents as a single ideological sequence. However, inclusion of an incident in such a publication does not in itself prove that the accused had any direct connection with those previous terrorist organizations or incidents.
Warning to target aviation sector
According to the report, the publication used threatening language such as the possible targeting of the Jewish community, aircraft of the US and other countries. The message claimed that such attacks could continue until the conflict related to Palestine ends. Such rhetoric raises concerns for international aviation security, as the safety of passengers, crew and civilians is paramount in air travel. It becomes important for security agencies to investigate such messages and assess potential threats.
Mention of second branch of Al Qaeda also
The report also said that Al Qaeda’s Yemen-based branch AQAP had published an editorial on the same incident in its publication ‘Al-Bayan’. It also claims to praise the alleged action and call for attacks against American and Israeli airlines. If such messages are confirmed, it shows that terrorist propaganda media can use an incident to spread their ideological message. At present, the final conclusion regarding the intentions of the accused, the entire sequence of events and possible organizational links can be drawn only after investigation.
