US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told the foreign ministers of many allied countries that America is not currently preparing to launch new military attacks on Iran. Rubio's statement indicates that instead of increasing immediate military action, America is focusing on economic sanctions, maritime pressure and normalizing the movement of oil in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. However, in case of any attack from Iran, America has not completely closed down the military option.
The Strait of Hormuz has become the most important front in America's changed strategy. The US Navy is increasing its presence in the region and trying to make the sea route safe. US officials claim that due to the military campaign, Iran's ability to exert pressure on the global energy market has been significantly weakened. Efforts are also being made to remove landmines in Hormuz and some oil tankers have started moving through the Southern Sea Route. Despite this, tension in the area has not completely ended.
America is resorting to new sanctions to increase pressure on Iran's economy. Washington has also warned other countries and companies doing business with Iran that they may face action if they violate US sanctions. The aim of this strategy is said to be to weaken Iran's economic power and to bring it to the negotiating table through pressure rather than direct military confrontation. According to US officials, this policy may continue till the mid-term elections to be held in November.
On the other hand, Iran has rejected American pressure and maritime action as illegal. It has also come to light that Iran's plan to impose fees on the movement of oil ships in the Strait of Hormuz is almost finalized. The parliamentary committee has said that maintenance and navigation fees can be charged from ships passing through the strait. However, this system has not been implemented yet. If such a step is taken, it could have a direct impact on the global oil business.
Meanwhile, Iran and Oman have discussed creating a temporary sea corridor in Hormuz for the safe movement of ships. Both countries have also talked about working towards removing landmines from waterways. However, amid tensions, the news of a projectile attack on an oil tanker has increased concerns about maritime security. In such a situation, there is a situation of pressure between America and Iran regarding Hormuz.
Pakistan is also trying to play an important role in this entire incident. After the visit of Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir to Iran and talks with the leaders there, the discussion regarding the possibility of mediation between America and Iran has intensified. At present, America's strategy is being seen as economic and maritime pressure rather than a direct new attack. It is clear from Rubio's statement that Washington is in no mood to take immediate military action, but it also does not seem to be prepared to reduce pressure on Iran. In such a situation, Hormuz and American sanctions may decide the next direction of this conflict in the coming days.
