America tough amid Iran tension. For NATO allies…

According to the report of American digital news platform Politico, the White House has reportedly prepared a ‘Naughty and Nice’ list of NATO member countries. It is being told that this initiative is part of the strategy of the Donald Trump administration.

Washington: Amid growing tension in global geopolitics, there are signs of a rift in the relations between America and its traditional allies. According to recent reports, the White House has created a special ‘Naughty and Nice’ list of NATO member states, which aims to evaluate the allies’ behavior and support—particularly in the context of the recent conflict involving Iran.

What is the ‘Naughty and Nice’ list?

This list is basically a strategic initiative to divide NATO countries into two categories—

  • “Nice” (Allies): Countries that openly supported the US
  • “Naughty”: Countries that did not provide the expected level of support

According to the report, this assessment is being done on the basis of factors like defense spending, military cooperation and strategic support. This initiative reflects the new US policy regarding balance of power and accountability within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Iran conflict became the main reason

Recently, tense developments related to Iran tested the relations between America and its allies. The US administration believes that many NATO countries did not provide the expected support during this crisis. In this context, the ‘Naughty and Nice’ list is being seen as a possible pressure tactic to motivate allies to play a more active role in the future.

US President Donald Trump has long warned NATO allies to increase defense spending and take more responsibility. This new list is being considered an extension of the same policy. The Trump administration’s message is clear that countries that do not contribute adequately to collective security may face consequences—be it a reduction in military cooperation or a change in diplomatic support.

NATO leadership and European response

According to sources, work on this initiative had already started before NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s visit to Washington. This indicates that America is ready to raise this issue at a higher level. There is increasing concern about this step in European countries. Many diplomats believe this could further strain trans-Atlantic relations, which are already under pressure on a number of issues.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had earlier clarified that the US will give priority to those allies that actively support it. Citing examples of countries like Israel, South Korea, Poland and Germany, he said that “ideal allies are those who step forward and take responsibility.” This statement shows that the US is now moving towards performance-based relationships instead of relying only on traditional alliances.

‘Operation Epic Fury’ and controversy

White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly also responded to the issue, saying that America has always stood with its allies, but not all countries provided equal support during ‘Operation Epic Fury’. This statement clearly indicates that America may make its policies more strict towards its allies in the future.
