Amidst India’s objection, China’s big bet on Teesta project said – ‘Third countries should not interfere’
New Delhi: Amid India’s security concerns, China has reiterated its support for Bangladesh’s Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP). Let us tell you, in a press conference held in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that this is a project related to development cooperation between China and Bangladesh and its purpose is not to influence any third country. He said that there should be no scope for outside interference in this cooperation.
Support will be given for the scheme
Describing this project as related to the interests of the common people, China said that the Bangladesh government is giving it priority. According to Guo Jiakun, Beijing is ready to provide all possible cooperation to take this plan forward. He also said that China wants to further strengthen cooperation with Bangladesh in areas related to trade, water resources management and public welfare.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said that for the first time, experts from both the countries will conduct a detailed technical study on this project. During this time, if the project is found practical and useful in the study, then China can consider providing financial and technical assistance for it.
Why did India’s concern increase?
In fact, after the extension of the agreement between Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and Chinese government company PowerChina in January 2026, this project has gained momentum again. However, India’s concerns remain regarding this project. This is because the Teesta river area is located near the northeastern states of India and the strategically important Siliguri Corridor. This narrow stretch of land is an important connectivity route connecting the north-eastern states with the rest of the country, which is also called ‘Chicken Neck’.
At the same time, if China’s technological or other type of presence increases near this area, then security related challenges may arise for India in future. For this reason, India is constantly keeping an eye on the developments related to this project.
