New Delhi. Amidst the ongoing tussle in the Election Commission, an important meeting was held on Saturday between Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and both Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. In this meeting, the Election Commission made its stand clear on many issues and also took many decisions regarding SIR. The Election Commission has said that the letter sent to the Cabinet Secretary was not a matter related to any policy of the Commission or the IT department, but was related to the functioning of an officer on deputation to the Commission.

The Election Commission held an important meeting today regarding the SIR of the voter list in Delhi. It was decided in this meeting that the deadline for filing claims and objections under SIR has been extended till 30 October 2026. At the same time, voters who receive notice will no longer have to go to the office of the Election Registration Officer (ERO) and attend the hearing in every case.
The Election Commission also gave its stand on the concerns being raised regarding removal of names from the voter list in Delhi. The Commission reiterated that important decisions including SIR of the voter list have been taken unanimously by the entire Commission. In Delhi, the deadline for disposal of notices and taking a decision on claims and objections has been extended till 30 November 2026. In Maharashtra also, the Commission has extended the date for filing claims and objections to 12 October 2026. The last date for disposal of notices and claims-objections will be 10 November 2026.
Election said that, booth level officers (BLOs) will visit the homes of those who have been given notices due to names not being mapped in the voter list or due to logistical glitches. BLOs will collect the voter's documents and upload them on ECInet. After this the ERO will decide whether the person concerned is eligible to have his name in the voter list or not. Such people will not normally be called for hearing in the office of ERO or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO).
