Anchor Dustin Nolan criticised media for ‘sanitized news’ in his emotional on-air farewell

KWQC morning anchor Dustin Nolan has announced his departure from the journalism industry during an emotional on-air sign-off using his final broadcast to reflect on his career and criticise what he called “sanitized news.”

Nolan delivered the farewell during a live broadcast on Friday at KWQC where he has worked since 2022.

He told viewers he has “chosen to step away from the news industry” after several years in local journalism.

In his closing message Nolan thanked the audience for trusting him and said he always tried to deliver news with honesty and transparency.

“I’ve always been myself,” he said adding that he worked to bring viewers facts rather than a polished version of reality.

He also used the moment to reflect on the role of local journalism. Nolan said news organisations should not focus only on trends or softened reporting but should challenge audiences to think more deeply.

“We have to take people out of their bubbles and comfort zones and make them think about the world we all live in,” he said during the broadcast.

Nolan’s departure also carried a personal note. He thanked his wife and co-anchor Jenna Nolan calling her both a professional partner and a major part of his life.

He said leaving the newsroom meant no longer working alongside her which he described as the hardest part of his decision.
