Andoni Iraola appointed as new Liverpool head coach – Deal done and official
Liverpool Football Club have officially reached an agreement with Andoni Iraola to become their new head coach. The 43-year-old Spaniard will succeed Arne Slot on a two-year contractwith the move now all but complete as he prepares to sign at Anfield.
A New Era Begins at Anfield
After Arne Slot’s departure following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign, Liverpool moved quickly to secure one of the most highly-rated young managers in the Premier League. Iraola, who impressed enormously at Bournemouth, has agreed terms and is expected to be formally unveiled by the club in the coming hours.
Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director—who previously worked with Iraola at Bournemouth—played a key role in bringing the Spaniard to Merseyside.
Why Andoni Iraola?
Iraola transformed Bournemouth into a well-organized, high-pressing side that punched well above their weight. In his final season at the Vitality Stadium, he guided the Cherries to a club-record 6th place finish and secured European football for the first time in their history.
Key strengths that excited Liverpool:
- Intense, high-pressing style reminiscent of early Jürgen Klopp
- Excellent tactical flexibility and in-game adjustments
- Strong player development and man-management
- Proven ability to overachieve with limited resources
What Liverpool Fans Can Expect
Iraola is known for a proactive, attacking brand of football with emphasis on quick transitions and positional play. His arrival signals a fresh start and renewed ambition as Liverpool look to challenge for the Premier League title and return to the Champions League’s latter stages.
The club and fans will be hoping the Spaniard can bring the same level of success he delivered at Bournemouth — but on a much bigger stage.
