At the Aug. 10 conferment ceremony, HKBU president and vice-chancellor Alexander Wai described Lau as a household name in Hong Kong and beyond, praising him as an example of excellence, dedication and perseverance.
Wai also commended Lau for his commitment to the performing arts, professionalism and generosity, saying these qualities have helped set a high standard for Hong Kong’s entertainment industry, according to AsiaOne.

“Above all, his humility and enthusiasm in giving back to the community, nurturing the young and supporting the underprivileged through different charitable channels and his own foundation, continue to inspire and shine a light on those in need,” Wai said.
The latest honor is not Lau’s first honorary academic distinction. In 2017, Hong Kong Shue Yan University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Literature degree.
Lau, who turns 65 in September, has built a decades-long career spanning music, cinema and philanthropy. He has appeared in more than 160 films, including the “Infernal Affairs” trilogy, and has also worked as a movie producer.
During the 1990s, he became one of Cantopop’s celebrated “Four Heavenly Kings,” alongside Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung and Leon Lai.
Lau established the Andy Lau Charity Foundation in 1994 to assist disadvantaged people and support education for young people.
He married Malaysian actress Carol Chu in 2008. The couple have a 14-year-old daughter, Hanna.
