Sudden changes in climate, uncontrollable rainfall, drought and crop pest infestation have become the biggest challenges facing all farmers in India today. Often due to not getting accurate forecast of weather or not getting proper planning of fertilizer and water, farmers suffer huge financial loss. Until now, farming was mainly based on experience and guesswork. However, now IIT Ropar has come forward to add modern technology to agriculture leaving behind this traditional prediction. This technology will not be limited to providing weather information, but will also provide farmers with essential information about when to apply fertilizer and water to their fields, which crops will be suitable for which soil and when there is a possibility of crop pests directly on the mobile phone. The main objective of this project is to make Indian agriculture based on accurate data and science rather than relying on guesswork.
What is ANNAM.AI and how will it work?
Project Director and Dean of CAPS Dr. This ambitious project is taking shape under the guidance of Pushpendra Singh. Dr. Singh explained that the main objective of ANNAM.AI is to create a Smart Agricultural Ecosystem by bringing together modern technology, digital data and hands-on agricultural experience. The entire platform is primarily based on three very important components: SWAN Weather Station, Krishi AI and ACE Chatbot.

Under this system, small-scale smart 'Swan Weather Stations' will be installed in farmers' fields or within a radius of 1 to 5 km. These stations will continuously collect spatial data such as soil moisture, air temperature, rainfall, wind speed and sunshine. This entire data will then be sent to 'Krishi AI', where machine learning algorithms will analyze this information meticulously and produce agricultural advice in simple language for the farmers.
Accurate identification of crop diseases based on more than 5 million images
The most important and powerful part of ANNAM.AI is 'Agriculture AI'. Sensor Fusion Technology (Sensor Fusion Technology) has been used effectively in this. This AI system integrates satellite imagery, data from local weather stations and information from ground sensors.
The biggest strength of this system is that this AI system is trained with more than 5 million crop and pest-disease images. When a farmer uploads a photo of an infected leaf or a disease of his crop to the app, this AI will diagnose the disease within seconds and guide him precisely on what pesticides or remedies to apply.

Weak internet and language barrier will be removed
Mobile network or internet is often a big problem in rural areas. Keeping this problem in mind, IIT Roper researchers have installed special 'smart AI chips' in SWAN weather stations. With these chips, even if the internet connection is very weak or completely cut off, the device can analyze the weather locally and make accurate forecasts.
Also, it includes ACE (ANNAM Chat Engine), an advanced chatbot to overcome the language barrier. This chatbot works in various Indian languages like Marathi, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. So farmers in Maharashtra can ask any agricultural query by speaking or typing in their mother tongue i.e. Marathi and they will immediately get accurate answers in Marathi.
7-Day Early Warning: Better Management of Irrigation and Fertilizers
This advanced technology not only provides information about the current situation, but is also capable of predicting future crises. With the help of machine learning, farmers will be given 3 to 7 days advance warning of threats like extreme heat, hail or possible pest attacks.
This early warning allows farmers to take measures to protect their crops in advance. Having an accurate schedule of when to irrigate crops, when and how much to apply fertilizers will prevent unnecessary wastage of water and fertilizers. As a result, the production costs of the farmers will be reduced and the yield and quality of the crops will be greatly increased. The project, if fully operational, will usher in a new revolution in the use of data and AI in Indian agriculture.
