Another league right after IPL: Board released schedule, matches will be held between 5 teams

The tournament is returning in its traditional mid-year window. It was initially planned to be held in late 2025, but was later postponed. Sri Lanka Cricket had then said that this decision was taken keeping in mind the preparations for the World Cup. There was also talk of holding it in March after the T20 World Cup jointly hosted by Sri Lanka and India, but that plan also could not be implemented.

This time LPL 2026 will be played on four grounds, which is a new change in itself. Apart from the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, the R Premadasa Stadium will also host the matches. Apart from this, Pallekele and Dambulla have also been selected as sites.

The Sinhalese Sports Club ground has long been considered the home of Sri Lankan cricket and is primarily famous for five-day matches. Recently, modern lighting has been arranged here, making night matches possible. Many matches were played on this ground during the World Cup, including the opening match between Pakistan and Netherlands. Now the competition is expected to get new attraction due to the league matches being held on this ground.

There has been no change yet regarding the number of teams. Earlier there was discussion of 6 teams, but no such official announcement has been made till now. It is believed that only five teams will participate in the tournament. There have also been reports of change in ownership of some teams, although no official information has been given on this yet.

The registration process for foreign players will start from May 4. However, this time there is a big challenge before the competition. Three other major franchise competitions will also be held at the same time, which may make it a bit difficult to attract big players. Nevertheless, the organizers hope that this season will prove to be exciting for the spectators and the addition of the new ground will give a new identity to the competition.
