Anthropic is reportedly preparing to tell investors that the total addressable market (TAM) for its artificial intelligence business could exceed a staggering $30 trillion. The figure would put the Claude maker ahead of SpaceX, which recently estimated its own potential market opportunity at $28.5 trillion.
The massive estimate highlights just how aggressively AI companies are framing the economic potential of artificial intelligence as Anthropic prepares for a possible initial public offering. A TAM represents the total annual revenue opportunity available if a company were able to capture 100% of its relevant market.

What Is Anthropic’s $30 Trillion TAM?
Anthropic’s calculation goes far beyond the market for AI chatbots or existing software subscriptions. According to reports, the company is looking at the full range of work that could potentially be completed using AI models.
That approach dramatically expands the potential market. Instead of counting only businesses currently paying for AI services, Anthropic can include economic activities that could eventually be performed, assisted or transformed by artificial intelligence.
The $30 trillion-plus figure should therefore be viewed as a measure of potential economic opportunity rather than a forecast of Anthropic’s future revenue. Capturing even a small portion of such a market would still represent enormous business potential.
Anthropic Could Surpass SpaceX’s Estimate
The size of Anthropic’s projected TAM is particularly notable because SpaceX recently made a similarly ambitious claim.
In its May IPO filing, SpaceX said it had identified the “largest actionable TAM in human history,” with artificial intelligence accounting for much of that opportunity. The company estimated its TAM at around $28.5 trillion.
Anthropic’s expected estimate of more than $30 trillion would therefore put the AI startup ahead of SpaceX’s figure.
The comparison also shows how technology companies are increasingly using enormous market estimates to explain their long-term growth opportunities to investors.
Why the Huge TAM Matters
For Anthropic, a massive TAM could help justify its rapidly increasing valuation and enormous spending on computing infrastructure.
Developing and operating advanced AI models requires vast amounts of computing power, data center capacity and specialized hardware. Anthropic has been investing heavily in these areas as it competes with companies such as OpenAI and Google.
A $30 trillion-plus market opportunity gives investors a way to understand why the company believes those expenses can eventually translate into substantial returns.
The TAM could also influence Anthropic’s product strategy. If the company sees AI models as capable of performing a significant portion of global knowledge work, it may prioritize products aimed at businesses and professional users rather than limiting itself to consumer chatbots.
Anthropic’s IPO Story Gets Bigger
The enormous TAM estimate comes at a crucial time for Anthropic. The Claude developer is preparing for a potential IPO, and investors will be closely examining whether its expected growth can justify its valuation.
Reuters previously reported that Anthropic is projecting revenue of roughly $190 billion to $200 billion in 2028. Those projections are expected to play a major role in determining how much investors are willing to value the company at a public listing.
Against that backdrop, a market opportunity exceeding $30 trillion strengthens the argument that Anthropic could continue growing rapidly for years.
However, TAM figures are inherently theoretical. A market can be enormous without any individual company capturing a meaningful share of it.

The Bigger AI Race
Anthropic’s calculation also highlights the increasingly intense competition among the world’s leading AI companies.
OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are competing to build increasingly capable AI models while expanding into coding, enterprise software, research, automation and other areas of knowledge work.
The companies are simultaneously spending billions on infrastructure in anticipation of future demand. Their valuations increasingly depend not only on today’s revenue but also on expectations that AI will transform enormous portions of the global economy.
Anthropic’s projected $30 trillion-plus TAM is therefore more than just a large number. It represents the company’s vision of how far AI could expand beyond chatbots and become a fundamental layer of the global economy.
If that vision proves correct, the current AI boom could still be in its early stages. For investors, however, the challenge will be separating the genuine economic opportunity from the extraordinary scale of the forecasts being used to describe it.
