Apple Releases iOS 27 With Long-Awaited AI-Powered Siri Overhaul

Apple has released iOS 27, bringing the company’s long-awaited artificial intelligence overhaul of Siri to iPhones. The update marks one of Apple’s biggest software shifts toward AI, while also introducing new customisation options, redesigned icons, expanded widgets and several improvements across the iPhone experience.

Siri AI Is the Biggest iOS 27 Feature

The headline feature is Siri AIan entirely redesigned version of Apple’s voice assistant powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence.

Unlike the traditional Siri, the new assistant is designed to hold more natural conversations, understand personal context and perform actions across apps.

Siri AI can search information from a user’s messages, emails and photosanswer questions about content displayed on the screen and perform tasks such as drafting emails or editing and sharing photos.

It can also access the web for up-to-date information when answering questions.

Siri AI Launches as a Beta

Siri AI is initially rolling out as a beta in English. Apple says support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish will follow in October.

The company has also introduced a dedicated Siri app, allowing users to revisit previous conversations and start new ones. Conversation history can be privately synchronised across Apple devices using iCloud.

However, availability varies by region. Apple says Siri AI will not initially be available on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS in the European Unionwhile Apple works on a path that meets its privacy and security requirements.

Which iPhones Get the New AI Features?

iOS 27 itself supports iPhone 11 and newer modelsalong with the second-generation iPhone SE.

However, the most advanced Apple Intelligence and Siri AI capabilities require newer hardware. Apple lists support for iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and newer, along with the latest compatible devices.

This means older iPhones can receive iOS 27 but will not necessarily get its headline AI capabilities.

Liquid Glass Gets More Control

Apple has also added a new Liquid Glass opacity sliderallowing users to choose between a clearer interface and a more frosted appearance.

Several built-in apps receive updated icons and subtle design changes. Users can also add extra-large widgets and customise the Lock Screen clock more extensively.

Separate volume controls have been introduced for ringtones, alarms, timers, alerts and system sounds.

More AI Features Across Apps

Apple Intelligence extends beyond Siri in iOS 27. Photos receives new AI-powered editing capabilities, Safari gets intelligent browsing features and Image Playground gains new image-generation capabilities.

The Shortcuts app also gains more AI functionality, allowing users to create automations using natural-language instructions.

Apple has simultaneously introduced expanded parental controls and other system-level improvements aimed at making iOS faster and easier to customise.

A Major Step in Apple’s AI Strategy

The arrival of Siri AI represents Apple’s most visible attempt yet to transform its traditional assistant into a more capable AI agent.

The rollout is nevertheless more limited than the iOS 27 launch itself because of hardware, language and regional restrictions. Apple is also applying daily usage limits to some server-powered Apple Intelligence features.

Summary: Apple has released iOS 27with the long-awaited Siri AI overhaul as its headline feature. The new Siri can understand personal context, interact with information across apps and screens, and perform more complex tasks. iOS 27 also adds Liquid Glass controls, redesigned icons, larger widgets, AI-powered Photos and Shortcuts features, and new parental controls. Siri AI initially launches as an English beta and is not available on iOS in the EU at launch.
