New Delhi, 15 September 2026: A mega infrastructure plan has been prepared by the Indian Army and the Defense Ministry to modernize the country's operational readiness and military logistics in the border areas. To give a strong response to the layered infrastructure built across the border by China, India has also intensified the work of building a strong network of road, rail, helipad, 4G communication and electricity on the northern borders.
According to the report of the Defense Ministry, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has decided to build 476 roads with a length of approximately 22,156 kilometers in the border areas. In the last five years, a fund of Rs 27,668 crore has been allocated for BRO, out of which work on 4,595 km of roads in forward areas has been completed. In the current phase, construction of 1,113 km of roads near the northern border has been completed. To speed up the construction work, new technologies like EPC model and drone based DPR (Detailed Project Report) are being used.
To ease military mobility in Jammu and Kashmir, 717 km long Trans-Kashmir Connectivity Project has been approved. Under this project, state-of-the-art tunnels will be built at Sadhna Pass, Z Gali and Razdan Pass. Due to this, direct connectivity will be maintained between inaccessible valleys like Poonch, Sonmarg and Gurez during all months of the year.

Fighter battalion reached Kashmir by rail
The Indian Army has achieved an important achievement through the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link. On 13 October 2025, an entire infantry battalion along with military material and weapons was successfully transported to Kashmir Valley by a special military train. Apart from this, military equipment was transported by goods train from BD Bari to Anantnag in September 2025.
Projects have been undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport to reduce the traffic load on the strategically very sensitive Siliguri corridor and to create alternative roads. Apart from this, a plan to provide 4 major strategic rail lines, 4G mobile network to 355 forward locations and electricity to 108 locations in the border areas has been approved. The new Mobility Plan Unit was successfully used during 'Operation Vermillion'.
