Gunmen attacked the bus and kidnapped students going for exams

Benue: Terror of gunmen has been seen in Nigeria. Gunmen attacked a passenger bus in Benue state in north-central Nigeria and abducted some students on their way to sit for university exams, officials said. Benue Governor Hyacinth Aliya said in a statement that the students and other travelers were abducted along the Otukpo-Makurdi highway. The governor did not say how many people were abducted, but local media reported there were a total of 14 passengers on the bus.

Search and rescue operation continues
“Targeting innocent civilians, especially students appearing for exams, is unacceptable and against every rule of humanity and civil order,” Alia said. The governor said search and rescue operations are ongoing to ensure the safe return of all those abducted. No group has taken responsibility for this kidnapping.

Why are students targeted?
Benue has been a major epicenter of armed violence in the Northern region of Nigeria. Here armed gangs often kidnap people living in remote villages for ransom. The kidnapping of students has become a hallmark of the insecurity prevailing in Africa’s most populous country. Analysts say this happens because armed gangs see schools and students as strategic targets to attract more attention.

People were appealed to remain calm
Following the attack on the bus and kidnapping of students, the Governor of Benue has appealed to residents to remain calm. He said that people should continue to cooperate with security agencies in rescue efforts and other operations. He also said that we will take decisive steps to protect life and property.
