Central government formed high level committee on demographic change: Amit Shah

New Delhi. The central government has constituted a high-level committee to study the unusual demographic changes and illegal migration. The committee headed by retired judge Prakash Prabhakar Navalekar will assess the national security and social impacts.

Announcing this on social media platform X on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the unusual demographic change due to infiltration and other reasons is a big challenge for the present and future of the country. To deal with this, the Central Government has constituted ‘High-Level Committee on Demographic Change’.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the formation of this high-level committee on August 15, 2025. Apart from the Census Commissioner, Durga Shankar Mishra (retired IAS), Balaji Srivastava (retired IPS) and Dr. Shamika Ravi will be members of this committee constituted under the chairmanship of retired judge Prakash Prabhakar Navalekar. Joint Secretary (Foreigners-1) of the Ministry of Home Affairs will act as the Member Secretary of the Committee.

The Home Minister said that demographic change is a serious problem related to national sovereignty, national security, law and order, social structure and protection of tribal society. He said that the committee will make a comprehensive assessment of the population changes taking place across the country due to illegal migration and other abnormal reasons. He said that the committee will analyze the pattern of abnormal population changes at the level of religious and social communities and suggest planned and time-bound solutions to it.
