National Armwrestling Championship in Gandhinagar: Kerala won the title for the second consecutive time
Gandhinagar. In the 4th National Armwrestling and Para-Armwrestling Championship held at National Defense University, Gandhinagar, Kerala achieved the honor of becoming the overall champion by winning the maximum number of medals for the second consecutive time.
More than 1800 players from different states across the country participated in this tournament that lasted for four days. This was one of the biggest armwrestling competitions ever held in India.
The competition was organized under the aegis of People’s Armwrestling Federation India (PAFI) under the leadership of Armwrestling Sports Association Gujarat President Rajendrasinh Parmar and Treasurer Mayank Patel.
One of the biggest attractions of the competition was Yuvraj Verma, who was crowned ‘Champion of Champions’ in the senior men’s category. Yuvraj first won the gold medal in the 110 kg category and then won this prestigious honor by defeating the winners of different weight categories.
He defeated 90 kg category winner Denik Lalruatluanga, 85 kg category winner Vethojo Lohe and 100 kg category winner Abhas Rana in the final. Yuvraj performed a brilliant double by winning gold in both right and left hand 110 kg categories.
In the women’s category, Madhura Hasan defeated Mizoram’s K. Defeated Lalhariyatpui and won the title of women’s ‘Champion of Champions’.
Many big upsets were also seen in the tournament. The biggest shock came when 18-year-old Abhas Rana created a new history by defeating long-undefeated Mazahir Saidu in the final of the 100 kg category.
In the women’s category, Joshya J of Kerala also performed brilliantly and won the gold medal by defeating India’s experienced armwrestlers Yogesh Chaudhary and Nirmal Devi.
At the conclusion of the competition, President of People’s Armwrestling Federation India and Vice President of Asian Armwrestling Federation, Preeti Jhangiani said that this competition has brought out new talents and increasing competition in Indian armwrestling.
Parvin Dabas, co-founder of Pro Panja League, said that such tournaments become a platform to prepare future stars and this time the level of competition was very excellent.
