New Chandigarh Test: Gill-Rahul’s centuries, India’s strong position; Afghanistan 451 runs behind
New Chandigarh. The second day of the one-off Test match being played between India and Afghanistan in New Chandigarh has ended. The Indian team declared its first innings on the second day after scoring 564 runs for eight wickets.
In response, Afghanistan has scored 113 runs in its first innings, losing five wickets by the end of the day’s play. Rahmat Shah is unbeaten on 43 runs in 81 balls. On the basis of first innings, Afghanistan team is still 451 runs behind.
For the Indian team, spinner Manav Suthar took three wickets in his debut match, while fast bowler Prasidh Krishna got two wickets. Afghanistan’s first innings did not have a good start. Opener Abdul Malik was out after scoring just 16 runs. After this, Sediqullah Atal returned to the pavilion after scoring 17 runs and Rahmanullah Gurbaz after scoring 12 runs.
Team captain Hashmatullah Shahidi spent some time on the field, but he too could not play a big innings and was out after scoring 20 runs in 48 balls. Just before the end of the day’s play, Afghanistan suffered its fifth setback. Afsar Zazai was out after scoring 3 runs.
Earlier, the Indian team declared its first innings after scoring 564 runs for eight wickets. In the first innings, captain Shubhman Gill (126) and opener KL Rahul (100) scored brilliant centuries. Sai Sudarshan (81), Rishabh Pant (81) and Washington Sundar (52) played half-century innings.
On the second day, the Indian team started playing with a lead of 368 runs for three wickets in the first innings. Captain Shubhman Gill and Rishabh Pant took the innings forward and took the team’s score beyond 400 runs in the first innings. However, after some time, Captain Gill was out after scoring 126 runs in 177 balls with the help of 15 fours and one six.
The fifth wicket of the Indian team fell in the form of Dhruv Jurel. Jurel was out after scoring 19 runs with the help of four fours in 20 balls. In the morning session, the Indian team suffered another blow in the form of Rishabh Pant.
Pant was batting brilliantly and was close to a century, but was caught out while hitting a big shot. Pant scored 81 runs in 121 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes.
By lunch break on the second day, the Indian team scored 475 runs losing six wickets in the first innings. After this, in the second session the team also crossed the mark of 500 runs. India’s seventh wicket fell at the total score of 510. Manav Suthar was out in the first innings of his debut match after scoring 28 runs in 41 balls with the help of two fours and two sixes.
Mohammad Siraj returned to the pavilion after scoring 22 runs on 12 balls. After this the Indian team declared the innings at 564 runs. Washington Sundar returned unbeaten on 52 runs on 68 balls and Kuldeep Yadav returned unbeaten on 9 runs on 26 balls.
On the first day, opener KL Rahul scored 100 runs in 165 balls with the help of 11 fours, Sai Sudarshan scored 81 runs in 104 balls and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 24 runs in 32 balls.
Fast bowler Mohammad Salim Saifi was the most successful for Afghanistan and took six wickets, while Ziaur Rehman Sharifi and Hashmatullah Shahidi got one wicket each.
