13 including 12 Indians killed in Qatar gas plant; 66 injured
Qatar: At least 13 people, including Indian citizens, died in a massive explosion in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Complex. According to the information, 12 Indians were among the dead. 66 others were injured in this accident. The incident occurred when efforts were being made to resume operations at the facility. It was closed after the attack by Iran earlier this year. Confirming the casualties, Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi described the incident as a tragedy and said the victims included workers of Indian and Pakistani origin.
Qatar’s Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi said, “Today I have to do something that I always hoped would never happen, and that is to announce the tragic death of 13 of our people of Indian and Pakistani citizenship.” He further said that 66 people were injured in the blast; The blast occurred when workers were trying to resume operations at this strategic energy center.
Indian Embassy issued emergency helpline
Following the blast, the Indian Embassy in Doha expressed concern over the incident and launched an emergency helpline for Indian citizens and their families. “The Embassy of India in Doha expresses deep concern over the unfortunate incident that occurred yesterday at Ras Laffan Industrial City, in which according to officials several people were injured and some are missing,” the embassy said.
The Mission also assured full assistance to the affected Indian citizens and their relatives. “In these challenging and difficult times, the Indian Embassy and the entire Indian community in Qatar stand in solidarity with the government and people of Qatar. We wish the speedy recovery of the injured and hope and pray for the safety of the missing,” it said. The embassy has urged those seeking help to contact its emergency helpline numbers.
Explosion during restart operation
This explosion took place in the Barzan Gas Supply Facility located in Ras Laffan Industrial Area. According to Qatar Energy, the explosion and subsequent fire occurred while efforts were being made to restart the facility after being closed for months due to tensions in the area. Initially officials had said that very few people were injured. However, data later released by Qatar’s Ministry of Interior revealed that the number of casualties was much higher, indicating the seriousness of the incident. Officials are still assessing the structural damage caused by the blast, while investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
