Hungary revokes refugee recognition of fugitive Polish former minister
Warsaw. Hungary’s new government has revoked the refugee status of fugitive former Justice Minister Zbigniew Giobro, his former deputy minister Marcin Romanowski and Giobro’s wife Patrizia Kotetska-Giobro, the Polish government said Thursday. After this decision, all three will no longer be able to use the special travel documents with the help of which they left Hungary and went abroad.
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on the social media platform ‘X’ that Hungary has not only terminated the refugee recognition of the three, but has also invalidated their travel documents. “The process of justice may be slow, but ultimately justice prevails,” he said.
Giobro and Romanowski face multiple charges of abuse of power, including alleged political misuse of money from the government Crime Victims Assistance Fund. Both leaders reject the allegations, claiming that they are victims of political vendetta and are being targeted because of their investigations against people close to current Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Both the leaders were ministers in the Law and Justice government that was voted out of power in 2023. The government of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban had given him asylum in Hungary. However, after the formation of the new government, Poland exerted continuous pressure and demanded termination of their international protection.
