Political turmoil over uranium agreement, Congress calls BJP’s claim wrong

  • Congress accused of taking political credit

New Delhi. Congress has rejected BJP’s claims on the issue of uranium export from Australia to India, saying that the process had started even before the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Friday that in 2011, the then Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard had obtained approval from her party to sell uranium to India. He said that this decision was taken after the India-US civil nuclear agreement signed in 2008.

In fact, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya had claimed that in the year 2010, Australia had refused to sell uranium to India, while later under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a uranium export agreement was signed between the two countries.

Responding to these claims, Congress said that BJP is presenting the issue as an achievement of Prime Minister Modi, whereas the decision regarding uranium supply had already been taken. The party said that attempts are being made to take political credit by ignoring historical facts.
