13th July is recorded as a historic day in the history of Indian cricket. On this day in the year 1974, the Indian cricket team started its One Day International match journey. In this match played against England at Headingley ground in Leeds, India played international cricket in 60 over format for the first time.
At that time the command of the Indian team was in the hands of Ajit Wadekar. England, batting first, scored 265 runs in 55 overs. In reply, the Indian team could score only 261 runs in the stipulated overs and lost the match by four wickets.
Although the result was not in favor of India, but this match became the beginning of the journey of Indian cricket which later on wrote a new chapter in world cricket. After this, India made the world realize its strength by winning the ODI World Cup in 1983 and 2011 and established itself as a superpower in limited overs cricket.
India’s first ODI match is still considered an important milestone in the history of Indian cricket, which opened the doors of new possibilities for future generations.
