- 1.56 lakh schools took part in the campaign
- UIDAI appeals to parents to get their children’s Aadhaar MBU done on time.
New Delhi. Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has completed more than two crore updates under the nationwide campaign for Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) in Aadhaar of school children. Under this special campaign, about 1.56 lakh schools across the country have been covered so far.
UIDAI said on Tuesday that this mission mode campaign, launched in September 2025, has been helped by technical integration with UDISE+. Through this, information about the status of MBU of children is available in schools. Special camps were organized at the school level in coordination with UIDAI and education departments of states and union territories, taking the facility of Aadhaar biometric update for children to their schools.
According to UIDAI, while demographic information and photograph are captured during Aadhaar enrollment of children under five years of age, biometric details of fingerprints and iris are not captured at that age as these biometric features are developing. Through MBU, updated biometric information in children’s Aadhaar is ensured over time.
Mandatory biometric updating is required when the child completes five years of age and again at the age of 15 years. Getting the MBU done on time keeps the Aadhaar authentication process smooth while moving from school education to higher education and facilitates availing the benefits of various government services and schemes where Aadhaar authentication may be required.
UIDAI has also given relaxation in fees to encourage children’s MBU and make it more accessible. MBU fees for children aged seven to 15 years have been waived for one year from October 1, 2025, while MBU for children aged five to seven years and 15 to 17 years is already free. Thus, MBU is free for children aged five to 17 years till 30 September 2026.
UIDAI has appealed to the parents and guardians to get the MBU done on time on the basis of children. According to the authority, not getting MBU done may cause difficulty in Aadhaar authentication to avail benefits under various government schemes. Apart from this, there may also be difficulty in registering for competitive and university entrance examinations like NEET, JEE and CUET.
