Administration involved to help passengers
Madrid. There was a collision between two high-speed trains in Spain on Wednesday morning. The accident occurred on a rail line connecting Madrid to the southern Andalusia region. According to initial reports, at least 30 people have died in the accident. After the accident, rail traffic was stopped on this route. Relief and rescue teams have reached the spot and started helping the passengers.
According to rail operator Edif, the accident involved high-speed trains of the Renfe and Iryo companies. Due to the collision, two coaches of the Iryo train derailed. An investigation is being conducted to find out the cause of the accident and the actual number of injured.
The accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. between Urda and surrounding areas in the province of Toledo, according to local media reports. A train traveling from Madrid to Seville was involved in the incident. In the video released from the spot, the train coaches were seen derailing. Broken parts, twisted metal and other debris were seen scattered on the slope below the railway track.
Preparations to help passengers
After the accident, emergency services asked the local administration to make necessary arrangements for the passengers and the injured. According to Urda Mayor Manuel Galan, the city council was instructed to keep other facilities ready, including a sports hall, so that the affected people could be accommodated there if needed.
A major train accident had happened nine months ago also.
This accident in Spain has happened at a time when in January also the collision of two trains in the southern part had raised questions on the railway safety system of the country. In that accident, a train derailed and collided with another train coming from the front. 46 people died in that accident near Adamuz in Cordoba province.
After the last incident, discussions had started regarding investment in maintenance and security of railway tracks. The reasons for the latest accident have not been revealed yet. Only after investigation by the officials will clear information about the circumstances and responsible reasons of the accident be revealed.
