Thimphu. The risk of floods has increased after the Glacier Lake Outburst (GLOF) incident in Bhutan. Bhutan’s National Center of Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) issued a public advisory on October 29 advising people living in sensitive river valleys to remain vigilant. Officials have appealed to people to avoid going to river banks and stay away from flood prone areas.
According to the NCHM, an artificial lake has formed near the confluence of Sintaphu Chhu and Lungu Chhu (Gangchen Tag Chhu) rivers in Taktsemkhang after the glacier burst.
Due to this incident, there is a possibility of sudden rise in the water level of the river and danger of flood in low-lying areas.
In view of the potential danger, officials have advised people living around the Mochhu and Punatsangchhu river valleys to take special precautions.
NCHM has urged people to stay away from river banks, avoid going to flood prone areas and follow the safety instructions issued by the administration.
The Center has warned that after the bursting of the glacier lake, there may be a sudden change in the flow of the river, which may affect the people living in the low-lying areas.
NCHM said that the entire incident is being continuously monitored in coordination with the concerned government agencies. The situation is being assessed and additional security related guidelines will be issued if needed.
The Center also clarified that as new information regarding the situation becomes available, further advice and necessary updates will be provided to the general public.
It is noteworthy that incidents of glacier lake bursting can cause sudden floods in hilly areas. In such a situation, people living in sensitive river valleys of Bhutan have been advised to follow the warning of the administration and remain completely alert.
