Wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler is set to miss out on England’s One Day International series in Pakistan post a hamstring injury.
Buttler was forced into retiring due to the injury during the One Day International against Sri Lanka played at Headingley last week however he would return to bat in pain later in the match.
The 36-year-old then had to sit out from England’s 223-run win over Sri Lanka at the Oval on Sunday, and will not be fit in time for the tri-series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka set to take place in October.
Buttler, this month, has taken the record of being the first England batter to score a total of 10,000 runs in the category of international white-ball cricket which includes both the 50-over ODI format and T20 match format. “Jos won’t be in Pakistan,” as said by England limited-overs coach Brendon McCullum.
“We know he’s an incredible athlete, we know he’s supremely fit and an ultra-professional, so he’ll do everything he can to get back as soon as possible but it’s hard to judge how long that will be, It’s disappointing not to have Jos but it will be good for us to see where we’re at, It’s disappointing not to have Jos but it will be good for us to see where we’re at.” McCullum further remarked.
England will play in two matches against Pakistan, following that the side will engage in two matches against Sri Lanka before a potential final appearance.
Buttler’s hamstring injury is likely to give Jordan Cox another chance to showcase his skills as England’s wicketkeeper-batter.
Cox previously accrued a total score of 76 from 52 balls against Sri Lanka at the Oval on his return to England’s ODI side for the first time since the year 2024.
