AAP Crisis: 4 treasurers of Kejriwal whom BJP took away, is ‘Udta Punjab’ now for AAP?
The discussion of a big political earthquake in the politics of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding 24 April 2026 is at its peak for the second day. It is not surprising that this happens. Of the party’s 10 Rajya Sabha MPs, 7 joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This development has come to light at a time when about a year is left for the Punjab Assembly elections. With this, a new narrative has rapidly emerged that BJP has taken the “four treasurers” of AAP into its fold.
This issue was a topic of discussion earlier also, but now it has gained momentum. Now people are comparing it with ‘Udta Punjab’. Which is a symbol of the negative image of Punjab. Although it is difficult to prove this claim with concrete facts, it remains a constant topic of discussion in political circles and social media.
Why are these four leaders being called ‘Treasurers’?
Among the leaders whose names are in discussion about leaving AAP, Raghav ChadhaSeven names including Ashok Mittal, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, and Rajendra Gupta are said to be involved. Therefore, it is more appropriate to view this entire incident as “claim versus confirmation”.
The word “Treasury” is being used as a political tag. In a way, it is being considered as a sarcasm, but this satire cannot be completely rejected. These leaders are being given this name because they have a strong corporate or professional background. Connected to big institutions and business networks. Rajendra Gupta is a billionaire. These people are also considered important roles in raising funds for the party. Anyway, there has already been a debate about “money power and influence” in the politics of Rajya Sabha, in such a situation the opposition, especially BJP, has been presenting these faces as “fund managers” or “treasurers”.
Are the allegations of ‘ticket buying’ or funding true?
Allegations were made against names like Ashok Mittal and Vikramjit Sahni that they “obtained Rajya Sabha tickets on the basis of money”. But no legal or official record has surfaced to prove these allegations. Neither did any investigating agency or court prove such a thing. Therefore, these allegations are currently more a part of political rhetoric and not established facts.
Is this a ‘Udta Punjab’ like crisis for AAP?
The term “Udta Punjab” was once used to describe the poor socio-political condition of Punjab. Interestingly, in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, Raghav Chadha had given the slogan of changing this “Udta Punjab” to “Uthta Punjab”. Now if the talk of leaders leaving the party on a large scale proves to be true, then the opposition is presenting it as a sarcasm in contrast to the same slogan. This has created the impression that instability is increasing in the party. The leadership’s hold on party MPs has weakened and ideological unity has decreased. However, this is still completely a matter of perception.
Is BJP running ‘Operation Sendh’ or is this an internal crisis?
AAP alleges that many leaders are under pressure from agencies like ED/CBI. Under this pressure they may leave the party. Whereas BJP says that the action is being taken as per the law and changing the party is a personal decision of the leaders. On the other hand, some reports also said that organizational changes by Arvind Kejriwal like removing Raghav Chadha from the post of Deputy Leader in Rajya Sabha have also become the reason for internal dissatisfaction. That is, the matter is being considered to be a mixture of “external pressure versus internal dissatisfaction”, which will become clear only in the future whether this is just a discussion or really a big blow for AAP.
What is the whole matter?
This entire incident is being said to be related to the increasing tussle and political speculations within the Aam Aadmi Party. Recently, Arvind Kejriwal, while making organizational reshuffle in Rajya Sabha, removed Raghav Chadha from the post of Deputy Leader. After this, discussions about changing equations within the party and increasing distance between the top leadership intensified.
Meanwhile, Raghav Chadha may make up his mind to leave the party and by raising questions on the leadership, he indicated that the party is deviating from its core principles. Although these claims have not been officially confirmed, it has further heated the political atmosphere. Amidst these incidents, it is also being speculated that along with Chadha, leaders like Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Swati Maliwal and Vikramjit Singh Sahni have distanced themselves from the party.
