For a time, disconnection from parents was unthinkable. Even if the marital life was stormy due to family differences, the children would choose their parents again and again. Expectations for each other were unbreakable. But over time, the type of relationship is telling. Nowadays, many people live separately after marriage. Reduces contact with parents a lot. Some shut it down completely. There is a lot of complexity behind it.
There was a time when the elders knew that they were wrong, but the younger ones accepted it for the sake of respect. But with time the concept changed. Along with changing expectations, social media is reshaping the relationship between parents and children. In some cases, long-term conflict, neglect, attempts to control, abuse – are creating a situation where children are on the verge of severing their relationship with their parents. Children who previously described parents in these situations as 'strict' or 'complicated' are now creating distance. A US national study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that 6 percent of participants reported experiencing separation from their mothers and 26 percent from their fathers. The researchers also found that, in some cases, the relationship was reestablished at a later time.
But there is no specific reason behind it. Actually everyone wants peace now. And that sometimes requires keeping a distance. Sometimes a complex relationship can be improved through changes in communication, accountability, and behavior. Sometimes people who withdraw from a relationship, later the relationship is much stronger. In fact, adults are now defining 'family' in their own way. No one tries to sustain a relationship just because there is blood.
