Marathmola Yashaswini Ghorpade's strong performance helped the Indian women's table tennis team beat Thailand to enter the quarter-finals of the Asian Games 2026 on Tuesday. After trailing 2-1, the Indian team made a strong comeback to beat Thailand 3-2 and reach the quarter finals. India will face North Korea here.
Yashaswini Ghorpade brought India back into the match with two wins, while Sreeja Akula sealed the team's victory with a 3-1 (9-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-8) win over Olympian and Asian Games medalist Suthasini Sawettabut. India has so far won three bronze medals in Asian Games table tennis. The first success was in Jakarta in 2018. Here the Indian men's team won the country's first table tennis medal at the Asian Games.
Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra then won another bronze medal in mixed doubles, while Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee won bronze in women's doubles at Hangzhou 2023.
Chetan Bhatt defeated in Karate
Earlier, India's karate star Chetan Bhatt lost to Chinese Taipei's Chung Meng-Yu Se Senshu in the bronze medal match on Tuesday. He then failed to get a podium finish in the men's 84kg kumite. Before that, Bhatt lost 8-0 to Jordan's Mohammad Aljadafari in the semi-finals.
