Assam minister’s daughter opened front against the government: Dibisa Mahant raised slogans in support of students in Guwahati.


The stir in Assam politics intensified when Dibisa Mahanta, a senior leader of Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), a key ally of the BJP-led NDA alliance, and daughter of cabinet minister Keshav Mahanta, joined the students’ protest. During this demonstration organized in Guwahati in support of the ongoing student movements at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, Dibisa raised slogans against the policies of the Central Government and demanded the resignation of the Union Education Minister. As soon as the video of this incident surfaced on social media, various discussions have started in political circles. Expressed strong displeasure over the lathicharge and action on the students. Talking to the media persons present at the protest site, Dibisa Mahant said that the students wanted to raise their voice for their demands peacefully, but the administration turned their movement violent. He alleged that police force was used, lathicharge and tear gas shells were used against the youth who were raising their voice peacefully. Despite this, the students did not withdraw their agitation, which shows the strength of their courage and determination. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded. CM Sarma said that when children become adults, parents should not be held responsible for their personal thoughts or activities. He clarified that family members can also have different political ideologies. Along with this, he said that he will discuss this issue with Dibisa during any personal meeting, but it is not right to target the concerned ministers on such matters.
