Assembly Election Results: BJP has a decisive lead in Bengal-Assam, TVK’s explosive performance in Tamil Nadu, Congress again in Kerala.
Kolkata/Chennai. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on course to win for the first time in West Bengal on Monday and is set to form the government once again in Assam. At the same time, actor-leader Vijay’s TVK has made a great start as the biggest party in Tamil Nadu. In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has taken the lead over the LDF.
The UDF has won or is leading in 101 of the 140 assembly seats while the CPI(M)-led ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is ahead in about 40 constituencies. Eastern India seems to be turning saffron as the counting of votes continues for the assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. In the assembly elections 2026, all eyes were on West Bengal, where the Mamata Banerjee-led party has dominated for a long time.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on ‘X’, “Lotus has blossomed in West Bengal! The West Bengal Assembly elections of 2026 will always be remembered. People’s power has won and BJP’s politics of good governance has won.” He said before the grand ceremony to be organized at the party headquarters in Delhi, ”I salute every citizen of West Bengal.
The people have given a resounding mandate to the BJP and I assure them that our party will make every possible effort to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of the people of West Bengal. We will provide a government that ensures opportunities and dignity to all sections of the society.” According to the Election Commission, the BJP won or was leading in 195 of the 294 seats, much higher than the magic figure of 147.
Trinamool Congress seems to be getting 90 seats. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee appealed to her party candidates and agents not to leave the counting center amid the ongoing counting of votes for the assembly elections on Monday. Banerjee, in a video message released amid the counting of votes, appealed to party workers to remain alert and not lose morale.
She said, “I appeal to everyone that Trinamool candidates and counting agents should not leave the counting centre.” Before the counting of votes, there was a tense standoff between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP outside several ‘strongrooms’. More than 2.5 lakh Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel have been deployed along with the state police for the election process. Opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari, who is challenging Banerjee in Bhawanipur, said confidently, “BJP will form the government.”
At the same time, the election process in Assam also remained very hectic. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma, BJP seems to be moving towards victory with a lead in 81 out of 126 seats, while Congress seems to be limited to 19 seats. In Tamil Nadu, the newly formed party TVK led by Vijay, who entered politics from acting, is making an unexpected performance in the election field.
In Tamil Nadu, TVK is leading on 109 seats, leaving behind Dravidian parties DMK and AIADMK. The ruling DMK is leading on 61 seats and AIADMK is leading on 44 seats. Top DMK leader and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has lost the election and many ministers are trailing his nearest rival. According to vote counting trends in Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) seems to be getting a clear lead, which is in line with the post-poll survey (exit poll) projections.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph said the figures indicated a trend in favor of the UDF in the state. He expressed confidence that the UDF will cross the 100-seat mark in the 140-member assembly. Congress General Secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra thanked the people of the state for their strong support for the party’s excellent performance in Kerala. In Puducherry, All India NR Congress won or was leading in 11 out of 30 seats while DMK got five and BJP four. TVK made its presence felt by winning three seats.
