Attack on Qatar, distance from Saudi increased! Is Iran isolating itself from the world?
New Delhi: There are generally two types of countries in war. One who uses weapons, the other who sets the table for negotiations. In the current conflict in West Asia, Qatar, Oman and Pakistan were till now becoming bridges between America and Iran. But now this picture is changing rapidly and Iran is removing its own mediators.
Qatar: Now the bridge of talks is on target
Qatar’s role in the Gulf has always been different. On one hand, America has its biggest base Al-Udeed there, on the other hand it maintained communication with Iran for years. Whenever tension increased, Doha became the only way to negotiate.
But this time the same Qatar has become the target of Iranian missile and drone attacks. Tehran says its target was American bases, not Qatar. But Qatar considers this an attack on its sovereignty. After the attacks, he announced to further increase security cooperation with America. That is, the country which was a mediator, now seems to be drawn into the war itself.
Pakistan trapped in double role
After Qatar, the most pressure is on Pakistan. Shahbaz-Munir duo had tried to negotiate between America and Iran in the last months. But meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi rebels started attacking Saudi again. Pakistan and Saudi have deep defense relations. Under the agreement, if Saudi Arabia is attacked, Islamabad will have to come to its defense.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar clearly said in Parliament that Iran should remember the Pakistan-Saudi agreement. He described Saudi’s security as his own security and appealed for restraint from all parties. Now Pakistan wants to remain a mediator and also a strategic partner of Saudi. It is becoming difficult for him to maintain this balance.
What is Iran’s objective?
Experts believe that Iran wants to send a message to the entire Gulf that if any action is taken against it, the impact will not be limited to America or Israel only. Under this strategy, it is increasing pressure on the Strait of Hormuz. His endeavor is to ensure that the ships passing through this route sail on his terms. But it can also have the opposite effect.
If countries like Qatar, Oman feel insecure then they will move closer to America. Oman itself, in collaboration with the UN, had built a shipping corridor in Hormuz. It is alleged that Iran also attacked ships passing through that corridor. Oman has warned and asked to stop the attacks. That is, the same strategy with which Iran wants to stop its enemies can create a new regional alliance against it.
