Australian Police Probe Online ‘Death Threat’ To PM Modi Ahead Of His Melbourne Visit

New Delhi: Days ahead of his scheduled visit to Melbourne, a ‘death threat’ has reportedly been issued to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The online threat has prompted an investigation by Australian Federal Police, according to a report in The Australia Today.

The IP address linked to the social media post has been identified by investigators.

The threat appeared in a comment beneath a Facebook post announcing the ‘Melbourne Meets Modi’ community event, scheduled to be held at Marvel Stadium on July 9.

An account with the user name Abu Mustafa (translated) posted the comment, which read: “The roof tops of the stadium better close during the event or he will be coming to Australia for his death”.

The Australia Today quoted sources familiar with the investigation as saying that officers are examining the circumstances surrounding the message. They are also assessing whether any criminal offence has been committed through this message.

Australian Federal Police is yet to publicly comment on the matter.

Modi will embark on another three-nation tour to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 6 to 11.

Australia will be the Indian PM’s second stop (July 7-9), after Indonesia.

Modi will meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, interact with Australian business leaders, meet the Indian diaspora and visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
