Bada Mangal and Shani Jayanti, special time to get divine blessings in Jyeshtha month

According to the Hindu calendar, the month of Jyeshtha has started from Saturday, May 2 in the year 2026. This month will continue till 31st May. This time the special coincidence is that due to Adhikamaas falling, Jyeshtha will remain for two months. This is considered to be the third month of the Hindu calendar, which is famous for the scorching heat and scorching sun. According to religious beliefs, this month inspires us to understand the importance of water, save it and express gratitude towards nature.

The influence of Sun God is at its peak

During this time, important festivals like Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi are celebrated, which strengthen the spirit of restraint, sacrifice and charity. The influence of Sun God is at its peak in the month of Jyestha. Due to strong sunlight and increasing heat it has been called ‘Jyeshtha’ i.e. superior or big. It is believed that by doing religious work, worship and charity during this period, a person gets mental peace as well as eternal virtue. This time also gives the message of maintaining self-control and patience.

In this month, worship of Sun God and Water God Varun Dev has been given special importance. Due to the peak of summer, the importance of water increases further. Therefore, giving water to thirsty people and animals is considered the greatest virtue. According to the scriptures, water scarcity naturally increases at this time. In such a situation, conserving water and maintaining the cleanliness of water sources is seen as a religious duty. Worship of Varun Dev brings coolness, balance and prosperity in life, while worshiping Sun brings energy and positivity.

What is Jyeshtha month related to?

Jyeshtha month is also deeply related to the worship of Hanuman ji and Shani Dev. It is believed that Hanuman ji is specially worshiped on the ‘Bada Mangal’ of this month, because it was at this time that he met Lord Rama for the first time. At the same time, Jyeshtha Amavasya is celebrated as Shani Jayanti, which symbolizes the birth of Shani Dev. By worshiping these two deities, obstacles in life are removed and the negative effects of the planets are reduced. During this period, organizing bhandaras, distributing cold water or sherbet and serving the needy are considered especially virtuous.

Following some rules in this month is also said to be beneficial. Keeping simplicity in eating habits, eating light and easily digestible food and avoiding excessive sleep during the day is considered good for health. Also, donating things that provide relief from heat like a pitcher filled with water, fan, umbrella, sattu etc. is very auspicious.

The fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is considered to be the most important fast of this month. It is believed that by observing a fast on this day without consuming water, one gets the results of all the Ekadashis of the year. Overall, Jyeshtha month teaches us to maintain patience even in difficult situations, adopt a spirit of service and always be ready to help the needy. By doing this, happiness, prosperity and positivity remains in life.
