On 10 July 2026, five MPs, including Jalal Kadhem Al Mahfoodh, submitted a proposal to Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam. This proposal has now been sent to the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee of the Parliament and the Industry and Commerce Ministry for review.
Why are rules necessary?
MP Jalal Kadhem Al Mahfoodh said that the work of online food delivery has increased very rapidly, but the old rules made for it are no longer sufficient. He said that new rules are needed to bring fairness in the market so that big platforms like Talabat, Jahez and Wasel Delivery work properly.
What will be the benefit to customers and restaurants?
- For customers: Now a lot of money will not be charged in the name of delivery.
- For restaurants: The high commission charged by companies can be reduced.
- Transparency: There will be clear rules of working between delivery companies and restaurants which will increase healthy competition.
The Bahraini government will now study the successful rules implemented in other GCC countries. At present, food delivery companies are required to follow commerce, municipal and safety rules. Also, these apps have to be registered under Virtual Commercial Registration (Sijili).
