Baisakhi is one of the major festivals of India, which is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm and devotion. This festival is considered very important for the people of Sikh religion, which is also celebrated as a harvest festival in Haryana and Punjab. On this day, while on one hand farmers celebrate the harvest of their hard work, on the other hand it has deep significance in Sikhism because on this day Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the Khalsa Panth, which gave a new identity to Sikhism. In this way, Baisakhi festival not only symbolizes the harvesting of a good crop but also gives the message of the upliftment of the Sikh religion.

How is Baisakhi festival celebrated?

On the day of Baisakhi, after taking bath, everyone goes to Gurudwara, where they listen to Guruvani with full devotion. On this day, special arrangements of langar are made in Gurudwaras, in which many devotees help in preparing and serving the food. Many people also donate to the poor on this day as per their devotion. In the evening, people of Sikh religion perform Bhangra and Giddha dance on drums.

Why do farmers celebrate Baisakhi festival?

India is an agricultural country, where even today a large number of people are dependent on farming. Rabi crops, especially wheat, are harvested during the month of Vaishakh in Punjab and Haryana. At this time, farmers get the fruits of their hard work throughout the year, which creates a wave of happiness among them. Farmers thank God on this day, hence they celebrate Baisakhi festival. Baisakhi is also seen as New Year in Sikhism.

Khalsa Panth got existence on the day of Baisakhi

According to the belief of Sikhism, Khalsa Panth was established on the day of Baisakhi. On 13 April 1699, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, called an assembly of his followers. In this meeting he asked the people who could sacrifice his head for religion. Then five youth came forward and showed their faith. These five were called ‘Panch Pyare’ and they were initiated by giving them nectar. With this, the Khalsa Panth was established, which gave a new direction and identity to Sikhism.
