Salary increased but still protesting, now on what demand are the protesters adamant?

The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the minimum wages, a day after a major protest by workers in Noida. Now unskilled workers in Noida and Ghaziabad will get Rs 13,690 every month. Earlier this amount was Rs 11,313. The minimum wage for low-skilled laborers has now been reduced to Rs 15,059 per month.

Skilled workers will be given Rs 16,868 every month. The government has taken this decision late on Monday night. Now companies will have to pay this salary. The new wages will be considered effective from April 1, 2026. Gautam Buddha Nagar District Magistrate Medha Rupam said that the high level committee had approved this increase. The Chief Minister took the final decision.

Understand where and what kind of wages you will get.

In other municipal corporation areas also, unskilled laborers will get Rs 13,006, less skilled laborers will get Rs 14,306 and skilled laborers will get Rs 16,025. In the remaining districts, the wages of unskilled laborers have been fixed at Rs 12,356, that of low-skilled laborers at Rs 13,591 and the wages of skilled laborers have been fixed at Rs 15,224.

Why are workers on strike after salary increase?

Workers want minimum salary of Rs 19 thousand. Are demanding facilities like Haryana. The workers have not yet been able to agree with the government on this issue.

Yesterday, 7 FIRs have been registered by us regarding the incidents that took place at different places and more than 300 people have been arrested. Those who were identified for instigating them have also been arrested and some arrests will be made in the coming days also.

What is the government saying?

The government says that before this decision, discussions were held with employers and labor organizations. This balanced decision was taken only after considering the suggestions and objections from both the parties.

What happened in Noida?

This increase comes after a major labor protest in Noida on Monday. Thousands of factory workers took to the streets demanding higher wages and better working conditions. At some places the demonstration also turned violent. The vehicles were vandalized. Arson was done at many places.

How did the protest turn violent?

Workers working in Noida’s Hosiery Complex demonstrated on Monday demanding higher wages. This demonstration was peaceful at first, but later turned violent. The protesters clashed with the police and pelted stones. They damaged several vehicles and set fire to several cars.

Where did the demonstration take place?

This incident happened in Phase-2 and Sector-60 area of ​​Noida. Thousands of workers took to the streets from the hosiery complex and nearby factories. They blocked the roads, due to which traffic was badly affected. People were stuck for hours.

Police said that 40,000 to 45,000 workers took to the streets at more than 80 places including Phase-2 and Sectors 60, 62, 84 of Noida. The police lathicharged and detained more than 60 people. 7 FIRs have been registered.

What do the workers want?

Workers are angry at getting lower wages in UP compared to the recently increased wages in Haryana. The minimum salary in Haryana is around Rs 19 thousand, whereas in UP it is around Rs 13 thousand. The workers are demanding salary of Rs 18 to 20 thousand, overtime payment, bonus and better working conditions.

Why protest even after salary increase?

The Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday had announced some relief for the workers, which included double overtime payment and timely payment of salaries. Some relief was announced on Monday also. The workers are angry about these rates. They expect better salaries, which are not being given. Gautam Buddha Nagar District Magistrate Medha Rupam spoke to the factory owners and gave instructions to protect the rights of the workers. Despite this, the workers suddenly became violent on Monday.

What are the police and government saying?

Police say that some external and instigating elements have fueled the protest. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in Muzaffarnagar that the government is with the workers. He appealed to the workers not to succumb to provocation and talk to the factory owners. He also asked to maintain direct communication with industrialists.

Now what next?

The government has formed a high-level committee, which includes officials from the industries department, trade organizations and industry associations. This committee will try to resolve the dispute between workers and owners. This committee will investigate the reasons for the violence.

In which states have such demonstrations taken place?

Workers had also demonstrated with similar demands in Barauni in Bihar, Surat in Gujarat, Manesar in Haryana and Panipat. The workers are demanding facilities like regular employees, higher minimum wages, better overtime and outstanding wages.

Labor organizations say that they expected wages to increase after the new labor code came into force in November 2025, but it did not happen. The Haryana government had increased the minimum wages on April 9, after which the protests there stopped. Now efforts are going on to reduce tension in Noida also.
