Crisis on minorities due to blasphemy charges in Bangladesh: 17 cases in 6 months, HRCBM expressed concern
Bangladesh Human Rights On Hindu Minorities: Once again serious questions have been raised regarding the security of minorities in Bangladesh. Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM), an organization working for minority rights, has alleged that blasphemy charges are being used systematically to target minority communities in the country. According to the organization, 17 such cases have been reported between January and June 2026, pointing to a worrying and repeating pattern.
HRCBM, citing the recent case of Deepto Rai, a Hindu youth from Sunamganj district, claimed that as soon as allegations are made on social media, a crowd gathers, police action is initiated and even before the digital forensic investigation is completed, the accused and his family face social, economic and mental pressure. The organization says that this is not just a legal matter but is also becoming a way of creating an environment of fear and insecurity among the minorities. HRCBM has demanded immediate intervention from the Bangladesh government and international organizations.
Claimed 17 cases
The Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM) said 17 such cases had been reported between January and June, reflecting an “alarming pattern”. According to the organization, “the recent blasphemy charges leveled against Deepto Rai, a Hindu minority youth in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj district, have once again exposed this trend.”
Pressure increased due to social media allegations
The organization said that as soon as allegations surface on social media, crowds gather, police take action, and huge social pressure builds on the accused and his family even before the digital forensic investigation is completed. HRCBM quoted the victim’s family and witnesses as saying that the allegation was “false and baseless”.
Religious places were targeted
Citing the FIR, the organization said that the case involved social media posts, police custody, mobile phone seizure and provisions related to cyber law, but at the time of the arrest it was not clear whether the relevant material was actually posted by the accused or it was controlled by him. The organization said that after this incident, there was a situation of attack and pressure on the family of the accused, his livelihood and also on the local religious place.
Minorities are being targeted
“For minorities in Bangladesh, this is no longer an isolated incident but has become a repeated process of social violence,” said the organization Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities. The organization claimed that last year also 73 minority youth were arrested on blasphemy charges. HRCBM said the real problem is not just the allegations, but the atmosphere of impunity that is created as soon as allegations are made, while families, properties and communities are targeted even before a court or forensic investigation takes place.

Appealed to international organizations also
The HRCBM organization appealed to the Bangladesh government, police, judiciary, Human Rights Commission and international organizations to treat the situation as a “national minority protection emergency”. He said that if this cycle is not broken, blasphemy charges will continue to be a medium of fear, displacement and mass repression for minorities.
