Bangladesh PM Tariq Rahman will not come to India! This big decision of the neighboring country increased the stir
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has taken a big decision not to visit India at present. Bangladesh’s leading newspaper ‘Amar Desh’ has given this information quoting sources in the Foreign Ministry, which has given rise to new discussions in diplomatic circles. It is being said that Bangladesh’s domestic politics is the main reason behind Dhaka’s distance from its oldest and closest neighbour.
Indication of distance from India and new priorities
Generally, the Prime Minister has been giving priority to India for his first foreign visit after the formation of the new government in Bangladesh. But after the elections held in February, Tariq Rehman has deviated from this tradition. He chose Malaysia for his first foreign trip and after that he also visited China. It is clear from this step of Tariq Rahman that Dhaka is on the path of change in its foreign policy. However, the bitterness that was there during the previous interim government has definitely reduced a bit and relations have become stable, but the old warmth is still missing in relations with India.
Pressure from fundamentalists and unresolved issues
Experts believe that Tariq Rehman’s government is currently under heavy pressure from the fundamentalist forces present within the country. For this reason they are trying to balance relations with India. There are many unresolved issues behind this distance, which are creating tension between the two countries. Among these, cross-border river water sharing and return of illegal infiltrators present in India remain the biggest issues of controversy.
Water treaty and intrusion dispute
The water-sharing treaty between India and Bangladesh is expiring in December this year, but no concrete agreement has been reached yet to extend it. However, Bangladesh hopes that India will take appropriate decisions in their favor on the water issue. Apart from this, the issue of return of illegal infiltrators also remains a headache between the two countries. India’s stand is clear that it will not accept illegal immigrants at any cost. At the same time, Dhaka has accused India of forcibly sending people across the border. Due to these disputes, there is often a situation of tension between the security forces on the border, which is a big challenge for the relations between the two countries.
