New Delhi: In view of the proposed three-day nationwide strike of bank employees, the Central Government has given great relief to the customers. Public sector banks and regional rural banks will remain open normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026. According to the Finance Ministry, this decision has been taken to minimize the possible disruption in banking services due to the strike and to meet the urgent banking needs of the common people.
Bank employees strike from 28th to 30th September
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a three-day nationwide strike from 28 to 30 September 2026. The strike is planned for immediately following the weekend of September 26 and 27. The Finance Ministry has said that disruption of banking services for several consecutive days may affect customers, businessmen and government transactions.
According to the government, the half yearly account closing of banks also takes place on 30th September. In such a situation, the strike period coincides with an important time for the banking system.
Banks will work normally on September 27
For the convenience of customers, public sector banks and regional rural banks will remain open on Sunday, September 27. The Reserve Bank of India has permitted the respective bank branches, offices, ATM connected centers and currency chests to remain operational on that day.
With this decision, customers will get additional opportunity to complete important banking work before the strike.
Demand for five day banking system
The main demand of the bank unions is to implement the banking system five days a week. According to the Finance Ministry, the unions had earlier raised two major demands—implementation of the five-day banking system and withdrawal of the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The government has decided to postpone the PLI scheme for the time being, while the demand for a five-day banking week has not been agreed upon yet.
According to the government statement, a one-day strike has been held on September 11 regarding this demand. After this, a three-day strike is scheduled from 28th to 30th September. Apart from this, an indefinite strike is proposed from 26 October 2026 demanding a five-day working week.
Why is September 27 important for customers?
The decision to keep banks open on September 27 has been taken at a time when banking services were expected to be affected for several consecutive days, including the strike and weekends. The government has said that this step has been taken keeping in mind the convenience of customers and continuity of banking services.
