Baruipur Child Murder Case: Autopsy Points to Sexual Assault and Drowning; Police Intensify Investigation

The investigation into the death of a 12-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur has gathered pace after preliminary autopsy findings indicated evidence consistent with sexual assault, multiple injuries and drowning.

Police have arrested several suspects and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine all aspects of the case, which has triggered widespread public outrage across the region.

Body Found Near Home

According to police, the girl’s body was recovered from a pond near her residence in Baruipur, located in South 24 Parganas district, on Sunday morning.

Her family told investigators that she had left home on Saturday afternoon to buy food but did not return. A missing person complaint was subsequently registered before her body was discovered.

What the Preliminary Autopsy Found

Police officials said preliminary postmortem findings indicate injuries to the victim’s body, including injuries to her private parts, scratch marks and bite marks.

Investigators also reported evidence of a serious head injury. According to officials, preliminary findings suggest the injury may have been caused by impact with a heavy object or a hard surface.

The examination also found water in the lungs and stomach, leading investigators to believe the victim was alive when she entered the water. Officials said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the completion of forensic analysis and the full postmortem report.

Police Investigation Underway

Police said the investigation is at a crucial stage. Officers are examining forensic evidence, witness statements and CCTV footage collected from the area.

Authorities said multiple arrests have been made, while additional suspects have been questioned as investigators work to establish the sequence of events and identify everyone involved.

A six-member Special Investigation Team has been constituted to oversee the investigation.

CCTV Footage Being Examined

Investigators are analysing surveillance footage that may help reconstruct the victim’s movements before the incident.

Police said the footage is being reviewed alongside other evidence to verify the identities of those allegedly involved and determine their individual roles.

Public Protests and Security Measures

The incident has sparked protests in Baruipur and nearby areas, with residents demanding swift justice.

In response to the unrest, authorities have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in parts of Baruipur and deployed additional police personnel to maintain law and order.

Investigation Continues

Police have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation remains ongoing.

Officials said forensic findings, digital evidence and witness testimonies will play a key role in determining the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death and ensuring that those responsible are brought before the law.
