BCCI reportedly considering Shreyas Iyer as India’s next T20I captain
The Board of Control for Cricket in India might shift who leads the team in T20 matches. Instead of Suryakumar Yadav staying as captain, eyes turn towards Shreyas Iyer – he’s gaining ground fast as the next possible choice. Change seems near, though nothing stands confirmed yet.
Word is out, Suryakumar’s ongoing slump with the bat has sparked quiet worry among pickers and board figures, even though India keeps winning under his lead. On the flip side, Iyer’s steady rise stands clear; he’s shown sharp judgment on the field, plus strong scores, most notably while steering Punjab Kings through a solid IPL stretch.
Suryakumar Yadav’s form under scrutiny despite team success from the BCCI
In July 2024, Suryakumar took over as India’s permanent T20I skipper, leading them through a stretch of success. Victory in the Asia Cup came first, followed by the capture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026, right on Indian soil.
Winning it at home marked a historic moment; India stood alone as the initial team to do so. Only two others before him – MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma had lifted that prize as captains; now his name joined theirs.
The Times of India pointed to possible shifts ahead, talks about swapping the T20I skipper are growing, fueled by worries over Suryakumar’s recent scores. Praise sticks around for how he guides play on the field; matches led by him often go India’s way without much stumble. Yet what once shone bright in his personal performance now shows clear cracks.
These days, Suryakumar isn’t the top-ranked T20I batsman like before. Back in 2024, he made 429 runs – average stood at 26.81. Then came 2025, and things got worse. Only 218 runs from 21 games. His average dipped to 13.62. Strike rate hovered around 123.16. Tough stretch, clearly.

Funny thing is, Iyer keeps building clout as a steady presence in the batting lineup and a skipper who gets results. Even though the T20I setup hasn’t called his name recently, his run as an IPL captain still stands tall.
Back-to-back campaigns under his guidance pushed Delhi, Kolkata, and Punjab into IPL championship matches. Victory came in 2024 when KKR lifted the trophy after a season shaped by Iyer’s leadership.
Right after the IPL wraps up, India dives into a busy stretch of limited-overs games. First up, Afghanistan visits for a home series. Following that, a trip to England lies ahead – five T20I clashes on the itinerary.
Matches in Ireland come next, slotted between tours. Later down the line, contests await versus the West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe. All these outings pile up across 2026. Shaping how things go could depend heavily on what happens during this run.
