Rohit Sharma ‘s future in international cricket has once again become a major topic of discussion, but Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has strongly rejected all speculations. Days after the veteran opener answered his critics with a memorable century at Lord’s, a senior board official reiterated that the Indian star is an integral part of the national setup and there is no truth in the reports surrounding his retirement.
Rajeev Shukla clarified the situation on Rohit Sharma’s future.
BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has clearly quashed rumors suggesting that Rohit Sharma is considering retirement from international cricket. Speaking to reporters during the inauguration of the mini auction of the fourth season of the UP T20 League in Agra, Shukla insisted that there has been no discussion across the board regarding the 39-year-old’s move away from the game.
“Rohit Sharma is part of our team and will continue to play. The things that are being spread in the media and social media do not make any sense. As of now, there is no question of his retirement,” Shukla said.
His comments come after widespread speculation about Rohit’s future during India’s ODI series against England. Questions were raised about the veteran opener’s place in the team due to him not getting runs with the bat for a long period, leading to reports that the third ODI at Lord’s could be his last appearance in Indian colours. However, Rohit dismissed these rumors in the best possible way by playing one of the best innings of his ODI career.

Facing mounting pressure, Rohit played a captaincy innings at the prestigious Lord’s Cricket Ground. The right-handed opener scored 138 runs in just 110 balls to become the first Indian batsman to score an ODI century at the historic venue. His innings was a blend of elegant strokeplay and calculated aggression, reminding everyone why he remains one of the world’s premier white-ball batsmen.
Despite Rohit’s brilliant innings, India could not cross the final target as England won the match and took the three-match ODI series 2–1. The defeat was the culmination of a difficult tour for the visitors, who first suffered a 2–0 series defeat against Ireland and then a 4–0 defeat in the T20I series against England.
Although the team’s results were disappointing, Rohit’s century succeeded in changing the discussion about his future, with many believing that this innings was a strong answer to questions raised over his ability to play at the highest level for a long time.
BCCI supports current leadership, despite criticism
Apart from Rohit’s retirement rumours, Shukla also defended India’s current leadership group amid increasing scrutiny following the team’s mixed performance on the UK tour.
Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubhman Gill Questions have been raised about the form, with India struggling in both the T20Is and ODIs. However, the BCCI vice-president clarified that the board has full confidence in the current setup.
“Everyone has the right to their opinion, but it depends on the selectors who will be in the team and who will not. The Indian team is performing well and winning matches, so there is no need for any changes at present,” Shukla added.
