  • BCCI’s New Retirement Policy
  • The price to pay for playing in foreign T20 leagues
  • A ‘cooling off’ period of five years

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a new retirement policy for cricketers. The BCCI is all set to come down hard on cricketers who suddenly retire to play in foreign T20 leagues. This important issue was discussed in detail in the recently held Apex Council meeting. Currently, BCCI is concerned as many Indian players have announced their retirement from international or domestic cricket and are joining foreign leagues directly. So now the thought of bringing a new retirement policy has started.

Growing trend of retirements for foreign leagues

As per existing rules of BCCI no active Indian cricketer who is under international, domestic or IPL contract is allowed to play in any foreign T20 or franchise league. But after retirement from all forms of Indian cricket and the IPL, playing in overseas T20 or franchise leagues is allowed. Taking advantage of this rule, many players have suddenly retired and taken the path of foreign leagues. Vijay Shankar’s decision to participate in the Lankan Premier League soon after his recent retirement made the issue even more hotly debated.

What is BCCI’s ‘cooling off’ rule?

According to reports, a proposal to impose a ‘cooling off period’ on players came up in the Apex Council meeting. Under the proposal, a player who decides to play in a foreign league after retirement may have to wait at least five years to return to Indian cricket. That means the player cannot make an immediate comeback in BCCI tournaments or IPL.

Trying to maintain the status of Indian cricket

BCCI wants to maintain the reputation of domestic cricket and IPL. The board wants the experienced players to contribute to Indian cricket for a longer time. That is why strict rules are being devised to curb the growing attraction of foreign leagues. The BCCI president and secretary are entrusted with the responsibility of taking the final decision regarding this policy.
