The political atmosphere has become heated after the announcement of by-election on Rejinagar assembly seat of Murshidabad district in West Bengal. Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) president and Rezinagar MLA Humayun Kabir accused the police administration of biased action and said that attempts were being made to influence the democratic process. He said that he will file a writ petition in the High Court on Wednesday.
Humayun Kabir, reacting to a recent arrest, said that if someone acts against the law or police system then it is the right of the police to take action against him. Therefore he will not comment on the matter of arrest.
However, he alleged that after the announcement of the by-election, the administration and police are targeting him and his party workers. He said that after the declaration of by-election on Rejinagar assembly seat, action is being taken only against his supporters in Sagarpara, Rejinagar and Beldanga police station areas, while no action is being taken against other political parties.
Humayun Kabir alleged that the Superintendent of Police of the district is not working impartially. The police are taking action according to what the BJP is saying and government power is being used to put pressure on the people.
He said that in a democracy all political parties and candidates should have equal rights to contest and campaign in a peaceful manner. He wants to convey this message to the Election Commission and all the political parties of the country.
Humayun Kabir also said that he will go to the High Court on Wednesday regarding this matter and file his writ petition. He says that contesting elections, campaigning and participating in the voting process is the constitutional right of all citizens.
Targeting BJP, he gave the example of Bankipur by-election in Bihar. He said that senior BJP leaders and candidates who had been MLAs many times had lost the elections there. He raised the question that if elections can be won through administrative machinery, then why BJP lost there.
Kabir said that elections should be free and fair and no attempt should be made to benefit any party through administrative pressure.
