In today’s era, marriages seem to be surrounded by dozens of rituals and traditions, due to which it takes many hours to complete the marriage, but Buddhist marriage comes with a different and simple thinking, where the marriage is completed in about 30 minutes to 1 hour. In Buddhist marriage, there is no emphasis on customs and traditions, rather emphasis is placed on mutual understanding and agreement between the bride and groom. The Buddhist wedding tradition is based on the ideas of Gautam Buddha.
The marriage tradition of Buddhism is very special in itself, where traditions like auspicious time before marriage, matching of horoscope of bride and groom are not followed. Why does relationship matter in marriage?
In Buddhism, marriage is not seen as a religious rite, rather it is considered a social system. According to Buddhist belief, marriage is a symbol of love, responsibility and partnership. For this reason, in Buddhist weddings, rituals like taking seven rounds and seeing the auspicious time are not performed. Whenever the bride and groom wish, the marriage can be conducted on the same day.
What is the Buddhist marriage process?
1. Engagement is not necessary – In Buddhism, the tradition of engagement is not considered necessary, but if the bride and groom wish, then engagement can be done. On the day of engagement, the boy and the girl exchange rings, after which they take blessings from the monk.
2. White couple instead of red couple – In Buddhism, like Hinduism, the bride does not wear a red couple, but wears white clothes. White cloth is considered a symbol of simplicity and purity.

3. Chanting of mantras- Buddhist wedding is often done in a hall or hotel, where a picture of Gautam Buddha is kept on a table covered with a white cloth. After this, the bride and groom together pray in front of Buddha and offer fruits and flowers. Then the entire family including the bride and groom chant the mantras together.
4. Husband and wife take vows – After chanting the mantras, there are no seven rounds in a Buddhist marriage. Instead the groom takes a promise that he will love and respect his wife. After this the bride also takes an oath that she will fulfill her duties towards her husband. After this the marriage is completed.
