Apple Masimo Patent Lawsuit: The world’s leading tech company Apple has received a major blow from a US court. The court rejected Apple’s request for a new trial and to set aside the $634 million (approximately ₹5,400 crore) damages award. The court has made it clear that there will be no change in the earlier judgment. The entire dispute is part of a long-running legal battle between medical technology company Massimo and Apple over the alleged use of patented technology in the Apple Watch.

Accusation of Massimo

Massimo filed a lawsuit against Apple in 2020 alleging that Apple infringed rights by using its patented technology. After lengthy legal proceedings in the case, a jury ruled in favor of Massimo in November 2025 and ordered Apple to pay $634 million in damages. Apple argued that the jury misinterpreted the patent, but the US District Court rejected all of the company’s arguments.

Apple Watch health features and patent disputes

The controversy is mainly related to features like blood oxygen, heart rate monitoring and health notifications. Massimo claimed that these health features on the Apple Watch infringed on its patents. The court noted that the Apple Watch could be considered a device covered by this patent, making the jury’s previous verdict fully valid and proper.

Impact on the US market

In 2023, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) banned the sale and import of some Apple Watch models due to a patent dispute. As a result, Apple had to start selling some new models without the blood oxygen feature in the US market and later made necessary changes in the features.

Apple’s next appeal

Apple has previously made it clear that it disagrees with the decision and will further appeal the matter. The patent in question expires in 2022, according to the company. As of now, the ruling will not have any direct impact on general users outside the US, but it may affect future Apple Watch models depending on legal decisions in the future.
