Big blow to Donald Trump from US Parliament, proposal to withdraw troops from Iran war approved
New Delhi: A major upheaval was seen in American politics on Wednesday. The opposition-controlled House of Representatives passed an important resolution demanding President Donald Trump to immediately withdraw US troops from the Iran war. This proposal was passed by a slight margin of 215 votes against 208.
Trump got a big shock
The biggest shock for Trump was that 4 MPs from his own Republican Party changed sides and voted in favor of the opposition Democrats. Considering the upcoming political scenario, this is being considered a big strategic and moral blow for President Trump.
Democrats’ tough stance
After the resolution was passed, Democratic Party leaders took an aggressive stance and said that this is a direct and clear message to the White House from the American people. This is the first time since the military conflict that began about three months ago that the House has passed a resolution so strongly against the Republican-backed government. Democrats are considering this as a historic step towards reviving the constitutional powers of the US Parliament and curbing the President’s unilateral military actions.
Accused of breaking the War Powers Act
This entire controversy begins with America’s ‘War Powers Act’. Opposition lawmakers say that President Trump carried out military attacks on Iran in collaboration with Israel without informing Congress and without its necessary permission. According to this law, the President has to obtain approval from Congress within 60 days for any military action. But its deadline has already passed. The Trump administration claims that the main battle has already ended but the ground reality is that shelling and attacks are still going on between the two sides.
The Senate path and the veto problem
After passing from the House of Representatives, this proposal will now go to the upper house of the US Parliament i.e. the Senate. The Republican Party has majority in the Senate. But there is a possibility that this proposal may also be passed by the Senate this week. If this happens, President Trump will use his special powers to ‘veto’ it. In view of the midterm elections to be held in the coming November, fear has started increasing among Republican lawmakers also. A long war may affect their election results.
