Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has resigned from all posts of All India Trinamool Congress on Wednesday. He was earlier removed from the post of Lok Sabha whip by the party after the West Bengal Assembly elections. Since then there was speculation about his dissatisfaction.
Kolkata: Political turmoil has once again intensified in West Bengal’s ruling party All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Senior party MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has resigned from all her organizational posts on Wednesday. However, she has clarified that she is not leaving the party and will remain associated with TMC as an ordinary worker. This development has come to light at a time when West Bengal politics is already in the news over several internal disputes and changes at the leadership level.
Resigns from all posts, but will remain in the party
Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar wrote a letter to the party’s state president Subrata Bakshi informing him about his resignation. She said she wanted to be relieved of organizational responsibilities, but would continue to work as a worker for the party’s ideology and public interests. Her decision is being considered politically important, because she has been among the active and senior leaders of the party for a long time.
In his letter, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has mentioned many serious issues. He said that certain incidents within the organization have been extremely uncomfortable and worrying for him. He particularly expressed concern over the following issues: alleged indecent behavior towards the woman MP and the silence of the leadership on the same. Allegations of corruption in the state, including issues like ration and teacher recruitment scams.
Controversy related to RG Kar Medical College and alleged attempts to suppress it, increasing outside influence in the party and opaque working style. He also said that it had become morally difficult for him to continue in organizational positions in such an environment.
Increasing internal strife within TMC
Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has raised serious questions regarding women’s respect and internal democracy in his statement. He said that if the dignity of women is not protected in an organization, then it becomes difficult to fulfill the responsibility there. He described his decision not as a matter of personal resentment, but of “conscience” and accountability to democratic values.
In recent months, discontent at several levels within the All India Trinamool Congress and discussions of restructuring have intensified. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar was earlier removed from the post of chief whip of the party in the Lok Sabha, after which there was speculation about his displeasure. Apart from this, he had earlier also resigned from the post of Barasat District President, which indicated that differences were increasing at the organizational level.
