Big change in ICC, Super 7 stage in ODI World Cup, the path till the final will be like this
There have been major changes in the format of ICC ODI World Cup 2027. This mega event, to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, will begin with the Super Series round. Apart from this, there will be a Super 7 round before the semi-finals. The ICC announced this new structure on Wednesday (July 15) after the annual meeting held in Edinburgh. The governing body of World Cricket said that this step has been taken to make the initial phase of the tournament exciting.
What is super series?
14 teams will participate in the upcoming ODI World Cup. Out of these teams, the three lower ranked teams i.e. teams ranked 12th to 14th will play the Super Series round, out of which one team will reach the group round, while the remaining two teams will be eliminated. ICC has not reduced the number of teams but with the arrival of the Super Series round, only 12 teams will play in the main part of the tournament i.e. the group round.

How will the Super 7 stage happen?
In the main round of the tournament, 12 teams will be divided into two groups of 6 each. The top 3 teams of each group and the best fourth-placed team in both the groups will advance to the Super 7 stage. Here too there will be round robin matches and the top-4 teams will get tickets for the semi-finals, from where the two finalist teams will be decided.

Change in the format of T20 World Cup also
ICC has also made changes in the format of T20 World Cup. Now 20 teams will be divided not into 4 groups but into 5 groups. Apart from this, 2 new knockout matches have been added. In the group stage, the top 2 teams of their respective groups will qualify for the Super-10. Even in the Super-10 stage, the teams will be divided into two groups of 5 each. In the last edition, there was a Super-8 round, which was called Super-10.
The stage has been changed.
The teams topping their respective groups in Super-10 will directly reach the semi-finals, while the third and fourth placed teams will have to play cross-pool ‘eliminator’ matches. The winning teams of the eliminator will qualify for the semi-finals. In a way, the eliminator match will be like a quarter-final for the teams ranked third and fourth in Super-10.
