Big change in NITI Aayog. Ashok Lahiri became the vice president
Two prominent names from West Bengal have got important responsibilities in the country’s policy making body NITI Aayog. Economist Ashok Lahiri will be made the vice-chairman, while scientist Govardhan Das has been appointed as a member.
New Delhi: NITI Aayog, which plays a central role in India’s policy making, has seen an important administrative change. In this new reorganization, two prominent personalities associated with West Bengal have been given top responsibilities. Renowned economist Ashok Lahiri has been appointed Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, while eminent scientist Govardhan Das has been inducted as a member.
These appointments are being considered a major step towards expertise-based policy making, which is expected to give new impetus to India’s development agenda.
Ashok Lahiri becomes Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog
Dr. Ashok Lahiri is considered one of the most experienced economists of India. In a career spanning over four decades, he has worked in many important institutions in the country and internationally. He has been the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India and has also served as a member of the 15th Finance Commission.
Apart from this, Lahiri has also been associated with global institutions like the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Asian Development Bank. His expertise is considered to be in public finance, tax policy and economic reforms. Lahiri, associated with the intellectual tradition of Kolkata, is known for his balanced and pragmatic approach to policy-making.
He has received education from Delhi School of Economics and Presidency University. His appointment is being considered a strategic step towards strengthening the government’s vision of a “developed India”.
Govardhan Das gets important responsibility in NITI Aayog
Another prominent name included in NITI Aayog is scientist Dr. Govardhan Das, who is an internationally renowned scientist in the field of molecular science and immunology. He is currently the Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Bhopal. Dr. Das’s research has particularly focused on the study of tuberculosis and infectious diseases.
In his scientific career, he has worked in prestigious institutions like Yale University of America, Houston Methodist Hospital, KwaZulu-Natal University of South Africa and National Research Foundation. Dr. Das, who has been a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, has made significant contributions in the field of science and research while representing India at the global level.
